The label
Pop as design, theatre, technology, and provocation.
ZTT Records was founded in London in 1983 by producer Trevor Horn, businesswoman Jill Sinclair, and writer Paul Morley. Its full name, Zang Tuum Tumb, points back to Filippo Tommaso Marinetti's futurist sound poem, and the label treated records as complete objects: sound, sleeve, typography, catalogue number, remix, myth, and media campaign were all part of the release.
The early ZTT identity was tied to Horn's studio precision and Morley's text-heavy pop philosophy. Frankie Goes To Hollywood made the label unavoidable with "Relax", "Two Tribes", and "The Power Of Love"; Propaganda, The Art Of Noise, Grace Jones, Act, and later 808 State and Seal extended the catalogue into electronic pop, industrial drama, dance music, and widescreen soul.
